Johnny turns seven

Our oldest cat, Johnny, turned seven on Wednesday. Lucky for Johnny, it was his mom's day off, so she could spend the whole day with him. And then when the weather turned unexpectedly warm, we couldn't resist going outside for some gardening and sunshine.

Johnny in the herb garden -- he's still getting used to his harness and lead, and got tangled up a few times.
But most of the time Johnny spent the afternoon blissful, soaking in the sun. His mom planted three packets of beet seeds while he sprawled out on the grass.

Later that night, all the kitties gathered for Johnny's party, and enjoyed the plate of tuna (shaped into a number seven -- his mom is goofy that way).

All in all, it's fair to say that Johnny Cat thoroughly enjoyed his seventh birthday.

A weekend of firsts

This weekend we had our 1st days of 70+ degree weather, our 1st two barbecues of the season, and our 1st blooms.

Finally! Spring must be on the way, because the crocuses are blooming. Last fall I planted a ton of new spring bulbs, and I've been anxiously awaiting their blossoms.
Bonnie spent some time admiring the new flowers.

But Clyde was happy just to spend some time in the sun on his cat matt.

A beautiful weekend comes to a close.

Spring has sprung!

Today's weather was just what the doctor ordered -- a few digits shy of 70 degrees. It sure felt warm! We spent some time hanging out on our back steps, wearing shorts. I did some weeding, while Ricardo had a beer or two... just a fantastic way to end the weekend.

I was amazed to see how many of my spring bulbs are starting to pop out of the ground.

Johnny joined us in the sunshine, and declared winter to be over.

Celebrating one year with Vince

A year ago we took in a little kitten who was living in the alley behind our house. He won us over with his meows and affectionate head-rubs. He's brought us so much joy.

BEFORE: Little Vince on the night we brought him in the house, looking like he's not sure if this is the place for him.

AFTER: One year later, a very comfortable, much bigger Vince sprawls out on the couch with his Dads. How could you not love a kitty with snaggle teeth?

We celebrated his special day with tuna (what else?) And yes, it's in the shape of the number 1.

All the kitties joined in the party....

... until an unusual visitor crashed the party!

My favorite spot in the house

Ricardo think's I'm loopy, but I love our mudroom.

This is my view of the mudroom from the kitchen sink -- I can see my garden out the window. Samantha is my constant companion, and Vince is always lingering around his bowls.

In my mudroom I have hanging veggie baskets, which I'm also using to dry my cayenne peppers. On the wall is a popover pan. The sign says "Beware of hungry cat."

Here are closeups of the measuring spoons and hooks that we got at the ACC Baltimore. They're handmade in Fall River, Mass.

These are my mudroom shelves, loaded down with tomatoes, canning supplies and all my grilling stuff. I have herbs drying in the paper bags.

But maybe my real reason for loving this little room is that it's always home to a cat, or two, and if you're lucky, all three.

How do YOU beat the heat?

The weather has been brutal here in D.C.

To keep cool, Clyde recommends lying on your back and exposing your soft underside.

And Jen recommends chopping off all your hair!
No more hair on my neck! Yeah!

Meet Bonnie & Clyde

These are the outdoor kitties that live under our back stairs. I named them Bonnie & Clyde because they're robbing us blind (of cat food). They're the younger brother and sister of out indoor cat, Vince.

Bonnie is a bird killer. She was so little we were afraid that she wouldn't make it through the winter, but now she's bigger than her partner in crime.

Clyde is so cute he needed 2 photos. He follows me around the garden waiting for me to crouch down so he can touch my nose with his nose.

Nor'easter night

We had quite a storm with about 5 inches of rain in a few days. When I got home Ricardo had a big fire roaring in the fireplace.
What a treat to have one more cozy night in front of the fire.

Vince loved it, too!

Blooms of the week II

Azaleas in the front yard...

And the most beautiful peonies in the backyard...

I cut the first rose of the season so we could enjoy it on our mantle. Less than 10 minutes later our floral inspector had spotted this new addition and completed his inspection.

How YOU doin'?

Our kitten Vince chillin' in front of the fireplace on Sunday night:

Dads told him it would be the last fire of the season, so he really got into it:

Merry Christmas

After out big shindig the night before, we didn't feel like doing much at all. Samantha and I spent most of the day on the couch while the boys played with their new toys.

Vince with his new balls -- how did Santa know that Vince loves balls?

Johnny investigates the stockings and the mice that Santa brought.

"We've been adopted" --- Ricardo

Meet Vince, our new kitten, enjoying his first inside meal.

Yes, I know --- we're crazy. It's a long story, but this weekend we welcomed a new kitten into our home. Actually, not all of us welcomed him --- Samantha won't stop hissing and growling.
Here's how this happened... this cute little tuxedo kitten lived in our alley when we moved in. Ricardo said the kitten greeted him on the day we moved in. Since then, every night we grilled the cat would come up to us and nudge, rub and purr --- he's very friendly. Our neighbors (who have 3 dogs) have been feeding him, and were planning on bring them in their home, since they had buried 2 of the kitten's siblings. Anyway, this weekend we were talking, and decided that we would take the kitten into our home, since we already have cats, and since we're crazy.
We named the kitten Vince, (bonus points if you can guess how I came up with this name --- remember: his big brother is named Johnny) and so far he's doing great.

They're well-adjusted

The kittie cats are settling into their new home, and have made some discoveries...

Samantha has discovered that the new couch is pretty comfortable, especially when you snuggle into the corner with lots of pillows.

Johnny has discovered that the stairs is an excellent place to get Dad's attention and to get a nice belly rub.
